How to keep the Ekadashi vrat

A simple four-step observance, from the morning sankalp to breaking the fast on Dwadashi.

Sankalp & snan

Rise before dawn, bathe, and vow (sankalp) to keep the fast with a steady, pure mind.

Vishnu puja

Worship Lord Vishnu with tulsi, flowers, incense and a ghee lamp; offer fruit and panchamrit.

Fast & jaap

Set aside grains and pulses. Pass the day in chanting, katha and charity, and hold the night vigil.

Parana

Break the fast on Dwadashi morning within the prescribed window, after feeding the needy.

Times are indicative and shift with your city. Check the day's Panchang for the exact tithi and parana window.

Do's & Don'ts

Do's

  • Take a sankalp at sunrise and keep the fast from grains and pulses
  • Worship Lord Vishnu with tulsi, a ghee lamp and the Vishnu Sahasranama
  • Spend the day in japa, katha and charity; keep the night vigil (jagran)
  • Break the fast the next morning within the Dwadashi parana window

Don'ts

  • Rice, wheat, lentils and all grains for the duration
  • Onion, garlic, non-vegetarian food and alcohol
  • Plucking tulsi leaves on the day of Ekadashi
  • Anger, lies and gossip — and sleeping through the puja

Is it common for you to hear about Ekadashi fasting but not know the significance this day carries and the reason for fasting? If yes, you are in the right place, as you will learn about the same, along with the 2026 Ekadashi dates, day, and the duration it will last. Well, Ekadashi is the 11th lunar day, and it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Observing a fast on this day and worshipping the deity removes sins from past lives and negative energies, builds self-control, and detoxifies the mind and body. So, in whichever area you are currently facing issues, Ekadashi tithi builds physical and mental health and also pushes one towards moksha or liberation.

FAQs

Tradition holds that sin takes refuge in grains on Ekadashi, so devotees abstain from rice, wheat and pulses to keep the body and mind sattvic for the day’s worship.

The fast is broken the next morning on Dwadashi tithi, within the parana window. Breaking it too early, or after Dwadashi has ended, is considered inauspicious.

The strict nirjala fast is not for everyone. Children, the elderly, the unwell and pregnant women should keep a lighter phalahar (fruit and milk) fast instead. When unsure, consult an astrologer or physician.

Nirjala Ekadashi, kept without even water, is held to grant the combined merit of all 24 fasts. Devshayani and Devutthana (Prabodhini) frame the four-month Chaturmas, and Mokshada — falling on Gita Jayanti — is revered for granting liberation.

There are 24 Ekadashis in an ordinary year — one in the Shukla (waxing) and one in the Krishna (waning) fortnight of each lunar month. In a year with an Adhik Maas (intercalary month), two extra Ekadashis are added. In 2026, an Adhik Jyeshtha adds Padmini and Parama Ekadashi, but since there are no Pausha-month Ekadashis in the 2026 Gregorian calendar the total remains 24.
